The bogost's main argument about social media is that the age of social media might end soon. Social media was never a natural way to work, play, and socialize, though it did become second nature. The idea of social networking change into Instead of facilitating the modest use of existing connections social software turned those connections into a latent broadcast channel. it’s a terrible idea that is entirely and completely bound up with the concept of social media itself which is a systems erected and used exclusively to deliver an endless stream of content. Content-sharing sites also acted as de facto social networks, allowing people to see material posted mostly by people they knew or knew of, rather than from across the entire world. The whole idea of social networks was networking, building or deepening relationships, mostly with people you knew. That changed when social networking became social media around 2009, between the introduction of the smartphone and the launch of Instagram. Social media turned everyone into broadcasters. The toxicity of social media makes it easy to forget how truly magical this innovation felt when it was new.
The bogost differentiate social media and social network into two main ideas. social network is an idle, inactive system a Rolodex of contacts, a notebook of sales targets, a yearbook of possible soul mates. But social media is active hyperactive, really spewing material across those networks instead of leaving them alone until needed. The authors propose social media as a system in which users participate in “information exchange” otherwise the network, which had previously been used to establish and maintain relationships, becomes reinterpreted as a channel through which to broadcast.
I agree with the bogost’s idea of social networking is such a magical innovation. It reconnecting people and deepening relationships to people around us that also can lead to new opportunities. What is concerning in here is that the way people use it nowadays. The idea of social networking already shift into something completely different form what is supposed to be. The focus now more in entertain people rather than building or deepening a relationship. That is also open up to new problem which is comparation. it is because of how everyone think they has the potential to reach a massive audience at low cost and high gain which makes everyone looking for other people impression and validation. Everyone trying to show the perfection of their life which some how they could even faking it. Using a social media was never be a complete terrible idea. In fact, it was good but we should concern about its impact of to our lifestyle, aspiration, and obsession. We have the audacity to choose whether we want to use it more like on social media function or social networking. Like bogost said we cannot make social media good but the way we understanding and maintaining it can help to make a social media a better place and get back on its original function.
